About Honolulu

Honolulu is one of the places of the state of Hawaii, which is one of the states of the United States of America. Honolulu has the status of being both the capital of Hawaii, as well as the census designated place, or CDP with the highest population. The common designation of Honolulu is the whole of the island of Oahu, but it is also used to refer to the city of Honolulu itself which is positioned along the southern shore of the island of Oahu as well as of the City and County of Honolulu. The name Honolulu means place of shelter, or sheltered bay in the Hawaiian language. According to figures collected in the year 2000, the population of Honolulu was more than three hundred and seventy one thousand people.

There is no other city except for the city of Honolulu which is incorporated in the state of Hawaii. Excluding Honolulu, all the other entities of the local government are under the administration of the county. The administrative jurisdiction of the island of Oahu is under the consolidated City and County of Honolulu. The area covered by the island of Oahu is around sixteen hundred square kilometers, which is the same as six hundred square miles.

The Honolulu International Airport, or the HNL, is located on the western part of Honolulu proper. This airport is the main aviation gateway for those people who want to come to the state of Hawaii, or want to out from Hawaii. There are a number of freeways in Honolulu which can be used to travel by road. One of them is the Interstate H-1. This freeway passes the Honolulu International Airport as well as the Hickam Air Force Base. There are several highways which link other parts of the island of Oahu to Honolulu proper. These include the Pali Highway, the Kalanianaole Highway, the Likelike Highway, and the Kamehameha Highway.

There are no professional sports teams in Honolulu at the moment. But the Pro Bowl of the National Football League is held in Honolulu every year in the month of February. Besides that the Hawaii Bowl of the NCCA football is held here as well.
